Matera is one of the two provincial capitals of the Basilicata Region, it is located on the Murgia plateau which in the east spreads to the coast of Salento in Puglia, and in the south it declines towards the coast of the Ionian Sea. A city with an ancient history, it has undergone profound transformations while maintaining a characteristic aspect linked to the natural context of the surrounding Murgia. This combination of civilization and nature today offers a spectacular landscape made up of both the Sassi di Matera and the surrounding context made up of valleys, canyons and plateaus carved over time by the Gravina stream.
